Utopia, an alternative rock band from Yaroslavl, Russian Federation, was established in May of 2004. Consisting of three guys and a girl: Evgeny "Gene" Zhdan, Sergey "Serg" Bystrov, Ludmila Frolova and Senya Ulitin, Utopia is the perfect example of "The ultimate band". Starting off with nothing more than low-priced drums and guitars, the gang has developed into much more than a band. "It was great!", lead vocalist Gene says. "Noticing that altogether we had about 20 or more songs, we decided to join up and make them as a band. We practiced 2 days a week and by the time of August 2004, we was recording our first demo, "Come As No Surprise".
Inspired by such bands as Metallica, Nirvana, Aerosmith, etc., Utopia took their material to the next level by touring in Russia. "It was a success!", says Gene. "Our first show was on Jan. 7, 2005 in Moscow. The public applauded all of our songs that night". The majority of 2005 for Utopia was spent playing on tour in Russia. "At the time", says Gene, "We were still in need of a producer". Suddenly, in July 2005, the group stumbled across Maki Kolehmainen, owner of Helsinki Records in Helsinki, Finland. "Mr. Kolehmainen said that he loved our material and assured us that Utopia would become stars", they said.
Determined to become Rock legends, Utopia immediately rushed to their local studio and recorded five songs for their new producer. "Soon after our material for Mr. Kolehmainen was complete, we received a call from Helsinki Records to record a demo-single", says Gene. "We hit the road immediately". By this time, it was the winter of 2006. Both scared and happy, Utopia and producer Kolehmainen went on to choose the first two singles: "Nidus" and "A Bit Of A Lad". "It took us approximately three days to record the new material", Utopia says. "We then agreed amongst ourselves, signed the contract with Helsinki Records, and headed back home until further notice."
Suddenly, it all went wrong. The employees working for Helsinki Records mysteriously disappeared, leaving Utopia stranded. With both their project and career left undecided, Utopia was back to square one. It wasn't until spring of 2008 when Utopia caught their next break, Royal Black Entertainment. The independent recording, located in the USA, almost immediately went into business with the band after listening to their material. "At first, I admit, I was skeptical", says Founder and CEO Robert "B. Rock" Johnson. "My main concern was the band's location, Russia. "However", Robert continues, "After reviewing their material, I had to sign them." Making little haste, Johnson immediately drew up contract papers for the group. "The process will be a little lengthy", He says, "But making Utopia stars can and will be done". Further information has not yet been revealed.
